Who thinks tiers exist?

There's a huge debate on the iternet on the existence of tiers. The theory is that some characters are better than others, and that they can be listed in order of effectiveness. The counter-argument is that all characters are more or less equal, ad that effectiveness is based on skill. This is evideced by the fact that tier lists are subject to change. Personally, I don't think they matter. Though some characters are better than others, it's not so much how good they are than it is how they play and how they are used by individuals. For exampl, characters like Jigglypuff and Olimar take a very specific style of play to use, but when that style is mastered, they are extremely effective. On the other hand, characters like Ike and Mario are much easier to use, and don't require a specific play style. But none of this has to do with the character's individual usability. What do you think?

I think it's all a matter of perspective, as i do most things. Like, for example, in the Lucario vs. Mewtwo argument, vitually the same character, except that Lucario has stronger physical attacks, and a weaker through, along with the awesome ability to be stronger when he take more damage. Mewtwo isn't as good of a character, I think he isn't at least, so to me he is a Lower-tier character. But for the most part, at least in my eyes, tiers don't really exist. I mean, there's no way every character is the same level in awesomeness, but their all really close. There's no way the programmers could have made the tiers for every character exactly the same, but it's barely tangible. I actually agree with what you said about some characters have a higher specificity in their battle style. Unfortunately, if a Brawler could discover this strategy and any of it's weaknesses, then they will exploit it with a character they know will be able to do so. Which in a way almost backs up the Tier theory.

A tier is like a way to measure a character's fighting ability. Like for example, the top two characters on the SSBB tier list is Metaknight followed by Snake. I actually have to say it's somewhat of a phenomenon, because even though i don't believe in it, and many people don't, but a lot of tournaments have the top tier characters winning first and second. So this could mean there is some proof to it.

That's because tiers are based on tournament data.

lol. I know that, but there has to be some kind of validity behind it, it's not like they pull that info out of their but, or use only three tournaments for their information. Because that would be just plain dumb.
